Tom Winfield DVM, BVMSci (Hons) MRCVS OCQ(V)-CA

Dr. Tom Winfield’s journey to veterinary medicine began with his love of science and the companionship of pets. Growing up in the UK, he knew from a young age that he wanted to study medicine and surgery. During high school, he combined his passions for animals and science, setting him on the path to becoming a veterinarian. He earned his veterinary degree from the University of Surrey in 2020 and worked in a large multi-disciplinary hospital for two years before becoming a locum while pursuing qualifications to practice in the US. When he toured VHA and met Dr. Nations, he knew he’d found the right place to continue his career.

At VHA, Dr. Winfield values the opportunity to offer gold-standard care to every patient, all under one roof. He’s inspired by the clinic’s excellent team of doctors and high-quality support staff, as well as the cutting-edge equipment available. One of his most memorable cases involved treating a dog with a persistent pneumothorax after a car accident. Without a one-way valve available for the patient’s size, he crafted one from a plastic bottle, catheter, and fluid line. The patient recovered fully, showcasing the resilience of pets and their ability to overcome adversity.

At home, Tom and his wife Daisy, a registered veterinary nurse, share their lives with their two rescue cats, Daphne (Noodle), a Siamese, and Timmy, a Ragdoll. Outside of work, Tom enjoys watching NFL games, supporting the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s drawn to the planning, precision, and data analysis of football, which he applies to his practice at VHA.

To balance the emotional demands of veterinary medicine, Dr. Winfield emphasizes separating work and home life. “This allows me to decompress and spend quality time with my family while giving everything to work when I’m there,” he says. He’s excited about the varied caseload at VHA, from trauma to unique medical cases, which challenges him and helps him grow as a clinician.

Dr. Winfield lives by the British mantra: “Keep calm and carry on.”
