Karlene Turley knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals, beginning her journey in veterinary medicine at the age of 16, gaining volunteer hours in small animal clinics. Over the years, she not only grew in the veterinary industry but also in the broader animal industry. “I’ve always enjoyed educating and helping others grow in the field, and I knew I wanted to support those new to the industry by helping them develop the skills they need to succeed,” she shares.
Karlene’s career spans everything from general practice clinics to specializing in equine sports and rehabilitation. During her time in Kentucky, she worked at the racetrack, managed a breeding farm, and cared for animals from birth to retirement. She also expanded her expertise by working in one of the largest equine hospitals before moving back into small animal medicine. Upon relocating to Florida, Karlene began teaching CVA students at a technical college, a role she continues to this day while balancing her position at Veterinary Healthcare Associates.
Since joining VHA, Karlene has found immense fulfillment in her growth, transitioning from her previous role in Sports Medicine and Regenerative Therapy (SMR) to helping develop training programs at VHA. “I’ve had the opportunity to learn MRI and CT and work with many different departments. Being part of something new and helping to build it has been incredibly rewarding,” she says.
Karlene was drawn to VHA because of the organization’s dedication to core values and the opportunities for growth. “There’s never a dull day, and there’s always something new happening. VHA presented me with the chance to grow, and that’s what made it the perfect place to use my skills and passion,” she explains.
At home, Karlene enjoys the company of her two dogs: Harvey, a Beagle mix, and Liberty, a Hound mix. Outside of work, she is passionate about hiking, riding, yoga, and gardening—activities that help her recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance. “I make sure to utilize VHA’s in-house gym and disconnect from both of my jobs with practices like yoga, meditation, and weekend getaways to new places,” she shares.
Karlene believes that every client and patient story leaves a unique impact, both professionally and personally, and she embraces this connection as part of her career.
